Welcome to this weeks newsletter
I’m delighted to say I survived last weekends deliveries!! It’s probably been over a year since I actually spent a full day making up and then delivering the orders myself, so I was pretty nervous about getting them all done on time. And it turned out to be pretty easy, so I’ve no more worries about not coping with the volume!! So feel free to fire in your orders, I’ll get them all done!!
However, big thanks must go to my “slightly” pregnant wife Karen who kept me topped up with bacon rolls and ran more than the odd errand for me at the weekend.
I would also like to thank all of you who offered to help – I was overwhelmed with offers from folk offering their services.
The plan for the 2 weekends is to deliver orders on the schedule below. Unfortunately, there will be no deliveries on the weekends of 20/21st and 28th/29th August. I’ll be on holiday in Ireland those 2 weekends – attending my brother in laws wedding and celebrating my 1st wedding anniversary. I’ve been told in no uncertain terms that I will not be cancelling either event to go delivering veggies. (Sorry, but I tried!)
Then the 1st couple of weekends in September will be the weekend service and we should be back to normal midweek deliveries in after that – and that includes deliveries to Fife!!
regards
Chris (and Karen!)

Hi, Welcome to this weeks newsletter
Well, it’s been a glorious day to day, I’ve spent most of it cutting grass and chopping down monstrous weeds that have gown up over the winter period. I tell myself every year that I will keep on top of the garden over winter and not have to do this every spring/summer!!
Anyway, lets hope the good weather lasts.
Website updates
The saga continues….!
You will notice that there is no longer an option to pay by paypal when you check out. This has been removed while my developer tries to figure out what he has done to break it!
It is still possible to pay by paypal – log into your paypal account and send the payment to sales@mylocal5aday.co.uk – or wait until the morning after your delivery and we will send you a link to pay by paypal.
Also, you will notice that the boxes for indicating any items you don’t want, the delivery date and the frequency of your order have all disappeared. Can I ask that you put any information regards these issues into the delivery information box as you check out.
Hopefully normal service will soon be resumed.
Some tasty recipes for you to try this week
I’ve been off my day job this week, so I’ve been able to do a bit of cooking myself this week.
I started off by doing some home made Thai cooking. the annoying thing with Thai food is that the prep time takes longer than the cooking time – but it’s worth it in the end.
Tom Yum Soup – CLICK HERE FOR RECIPE
I prefer to make it with Chicken instead of Prawns.
If you can’t get Galangal (which you don’t eat, it’s just for flavour) you can use ginger – it’s not really the same, but it odes give a nice flavour
I’ve also never made it with tamarind water, which seems like an extra fuss (and they didn’t use it in the cooking class I had in thailand!)
Fish sauce can give it a nasty taste, so add sugar to balance it out – keep tasting and adding a little sugar until the flavour is just right
Thai Beef Salad – CLICK HERE FOR RECIPE
This one has lots of variations – basically throw in what you like. I particularly like making this with duck, marinade the duck overnight in some thai 7 spice before cooking
You can use any salad leaf, but i like to throw lots of fresh coriander in amongst it, rocket is nice too.
I also like to add a chopped apple, red pepper and some walnuts or sunflower seeds
For the dressing I prefer to put in 4/5 table spoons of thai sweet chilli sauce, add 2 teaspoons of fish oil and add sugar and lime to take the edge of the fish oil, then put the duck
and veggies back into it so they all get coated – then serve on top of the salad leaves
Slow cookers?
I bought a slow cooker today, so tomorrow i’m trying a venison casserole in the slow cooker. If anyone knows much about slow cooking, please get in touch and let me know
your favourite recipes, hints and tips. I’l give a few of them a bash and share the knowledge in a future newletter
Braised venison casserole – CLICK HERE FOR RECIPE
I’ve made this one a few times using the conventional casserole pot in the oven, so i’m looking forward to trying it in the slow cooker.

Mylocal5aday weekly update
Saturday, May 28th, 2011
Hi, Welcome to this weeks newsletter
Windy enough for you? Apologies to our Fife customers, we couldn’t get across the Forth Bridge on Monday evening, hopefully the delay didn’t affect you too much. The severe weather caused us a 24 hour power cut, so we didn’t have our problems to seek this week. Luckily we’ve got through it all OK.
Website updates
Apologies for the disruption to the service this week – something i was assured would take a few hours several weeks ago, has turned into a 3 week long saga bringing me new problems every day. I’ve been ASSURED (once again) they will be fixed this week.
One word of caution, the layout in the boxes has changed slightly, so take care when picking your box items. You need to pick the box ABOVE the item description.
Please just double check your BASKET contents before checking out in case of errors.

Food Hygiene tips
Keep raw and cooked foods separate
Ensure fridge temperature is below 5 C
Wash hands before preparing food
Replace dish cloths & tea towels daily
Store raw meat etc at the lowest point in the fridge so that it will not drip onto other foods
Surfaces and chopping boards used to prepare raw foods should be mopped with kitchen roll then thoroughly washed.
Plastic chopping boards are easier to keep clean than wooden ones although it is thought that wooden boards may contain as natural antibacterial agent.
Keep all food covered to ensure it cannot be contaminated by flies
Do not buy dirty or eggs with cracked shells;
Store eggs in the fridge to discourage bacteria growth;
Never eat uncooked eggs
Food prices driven up by global warming, study shows
Global warming has already harmed the world’s food production and has driven up food prices by as much as 20% over recent decades, new research has revealed.
The drop in the productivity of crop plants around the world was not caused by changes in rainfall but was because higher temperatures can cause dehydration, prevent pollination and lead to slowed photosynthesis.
Lester Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute, Washington DC, said the findings indicate a turning point: “Agriculture as it exists today evolved over 11,000 years of reasonably stable climate, but that climate system is no more.” Adaptation is difficult because our knowledge of the future is not strong enough to drive new investments, he said, “so we just keep going, hoping for the best.”
The scientists say their work shows how crucial it is to find ways to adapt farming to a warmer world, to ensure that rises in global population are matched by rising food production. “It is vital,” said Wolfram Schlenker, at Columbia University in New York and one of the research team. “If we continue to have the same seed varieties and temperatures continue to rise, then food prices will rise further. [Addressing] that is the big question.”
Thanks to you all for your continued support.

Whats new this week?
Well, 3 great weeks of sunshine and holidays…….couldn’t have been better timed. Sadly looks like that is it over for a while. I suppose we should be used to it by now! My wife faces her 1st 5 day week back at work for what feels like MONTHS!! She really isn’t looking forward to it!
I’ve not added any new produce this week. However, Asparagus is now in season and we are getting good supplies from local and uk wide sources. I’m busy adding a few asparagus recipes to the site right now.
Weekend Website updates
Hi, On Friday and Saturday we are hoping to make some changes to the website, so you may notice it is unavailable. It should be down for about 4 hours in total when it does go down, so don’t spend all day hanging around and hitting refresh, do something fun and come back and place your order later
If you are out!
If we miss you when we deliver, fear not! We will leave your delivery in the safe place indicated on your order and we will then send you a link so you can pay online – there, I bet you’ll all sleep better knowing that!

What’s new this week? 06 March 2011
Mylocal5aday attended the Falkirk Food Network Community Food Development event last Tuesday. Lots of contacts were made and hopefully Mylocal5aday will be getting involved in a few more community Fruit & Veg projects.
As mentioned last week, final year marketing students, as part of their degree project, should have started contacting you all to get your feedback on the service provided by Mylocal5aday. We are looking for your thoughts and feedback on all areas of our service – good/bad/indifferent, what we can do to improve the service on offer etc. The survey will be conducted by the students, so please feel free to give your opinions – and don’t spare our blushes. Without your feedback and highlighting problem areas, we can’t address them.
It pancake day this week, I’ve spent this morning adding some pancake recipes to the website – you can get them here http://mylocal5aday.co.uk/blog/category/recipes/pancakes/
Personally, i’m a banana, nutella and chopped peanut pancake man myself. But i like the look of the banana soufflé recipe.
I’ll be adding some different types of rice later today – long grain, brown, basmati, pudding etc.
mylocal5aday is now delivering to Harthill, Whitburn, West Calder, Polbeth and Midcalder.
